2013 Ram 3500 Laramie Longhorn Crew Cab 4x4 Dually

The phrase “Rollin’ Coal” is often used amongst diesel truck owners and enthusiasts alike. As I have owned a diesel-powered truck in the past, it was a great experience to test drive the 6.7 liter Cummins turbo diesel engine. The dual rear tires and Longhorn trim topped off the heavy hauling experience with great stability, control and style.

The 6.7 liter Cummins is a powerhouse of an engine- pushing 385 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. The increase in pure power compared to previous models comes from the switch to a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) strategy. The presence of DEF and a new SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) allows the engine to breathe deeply and exhale even more cleanly. The AISIN heavy duty 6-speed automatic transmission has been added to handle the enormous amount of torque.

The Black Ram with a Canyon Brown interior that was loaned to me this past week came ready to tow with a gooseneck hitch and 7 pin wiring harness installed under the hard, folding tonneau cover inside of the protected, oversized bed. Thanks to a gracious and curious neighbor, the Ram was hooked up to his 40’ gooseneck toy hauler trailer which weighed in at about 21,000 lbs. The Ram is rated to pull more than 30,000 lbs, which is quite literally, tons more than competition in the same class. After setting the correct gain for the trailer brakes and activating the tow/haul and exhaust braking system, we started our climb up Logan Canyon towards Beaver Mountain Ski Resort.

The two lane, winding canyon road up through Logan Canyon to Beaver Mountain climbs nearly 3,000 feet in elevation in just 30 short miles along the Logan River. The Ram conquered this climb with ease, stability and comfort. The diesel exhaust brake held back the heavy rig when traveling back down the steep canyon road and hardly had to engage the brakes when maneuvering curves, thanks to the low rumbling diesel exhaust braking system.

The Laramie and Longhorn combination is leather on leather. There is custom stitched leather covering the inside of the cab from the bucket seats to the dash, the steering wheel to the doors and even the leather satchel style seat pockets with saddlebag buckles. The front bucket seats are heated and ventilated and the rear fold up seats are heated. Ram has also provided a wifi hotspot option which was very convenient to connect many devices while traveling in this truck.

The Ram’s 8.4 inch backup camera and satellite/navigation touch screen display is powered by Uconnect and comes with several features not found in most new trucks. Of course, it is Bluetooth enabled with voice command and SiriusXM, but one customizable feature is that occupants can select favorite artists or songs, then add them to a stored playlist. An alert will sound when the previously selected artist or song is playing on another satellite station and the ability to utilize the playback option allows listeners to enjoy their favorite songs all over again.

Even though “Rollin’ Coal” refers to the black smoke some diesel engines discharge at peak engine performance levels, it was an awesome experience to temporarily join the heavy hauling diesel performance crowd with this clean and luxurious powerhouse of a truck.
