The phrase “Rollin’ Coal” is often used amongst diesel truck owners and enthusiasts alike. As I have owned a diesel-powered truck in the past, it was a great experience to test drive the 6.7 liter Cummins turbo diesel engine. The dual rear tires and Longhorn trim topped off the heavy hauling experience with great stability, control and style.
The 6.7 liter Cummins is a powerhouse of an engine- pushing 385 horsepower and 850 lb-ft of torque at 1,600 rpm. The increase in pure power compared to previous models comes from the switch to a Diesel Exhaust Fluid (DEF) strategy. The presence of DEF and a new SCR (Selective Catalytic Reduction) allows the engine to breathe deeply and exhale even more cleanly. The AISIN heavy duty 6-speed automatic transmission has been added to handle the enormous amount of torque.
The two lane, winding canyon road up through Logan Canyon to Beaver Mountain climbs nearly 3,000 feet in elevation in just 30 short miles along the Logan River. The Ram conquered this climb with ease, stability and comfort. The diesel exhaust brake held back the heavy rig when traveling back down the steep canyon road and hardly had to engage the brakes when maneuvering curves, thanks to the low rumbling diesel exhaust braking system.
The Ram’s 8.4 inch backup camera and satellite/navigation touch screen display is powered by Uconnect and comes with several features not found in most new trucks. Of course, it is Bluetooth enabled with voice command and SiriusXM, but one customizable feature is that occupants can select favorite artists or songs, then add them to a stored playlist. An alert will sound when the previously selected artist or song is playing on another satellite station and the ability to utilize the playback option allows listeners to enjoy their favorite songs all over again.
Even though “Rollin’ Coal” refers to the black smoke some diesel engines discharge at peak engine performance levels, it was an awesome experience to temporarily join the heavy hauling diesel performance crowd with this clean and luxurious powerhouse of a truck.
